December gathering

The 37th gathering of the Ragamuffin Cooking Club is hereby announced! It's time for our 3rd annual cookie swap!! It's been a favorite! (See last 2 years' pictures here and here.)

Theme: Cookie swap!

Date & Time: Saturday, December 13th, 6:30pm (you might like to have a light dinner beforehand, because this is going to be ALL COOKIES!)

Place: Chad & Karen's

The Rules: Some of you enjoy making holiday cookies for gifts or Christmas parties, so a cookie swap will be a great way to get new recipe ideas! If EVERYONE is able to come we will have 12-15 people, but most likely closer to 10-12. So everyone can try about a few of each person's cookie (to taste at the club gathering, and to bring home and ponder later), then each person should bring about two to three dozen cookies. Also, this time it will be very important to bring copies or web links of your recipe to share! And, to get your extra cookies home, be sure to bring ziploc bags or containers.

We need signups for the following:

  • 2-3 dozen cookies
  • 2-3 dozen cookies
  • 2-3 dozen cookies
  • 2-3 dozen cookies
  • 2-3 dozen cookies + drink (perhaps a holiday cider?)
  • 2-3 dozen cookies + drink (perhaps a holiday punch?)
    etc. etc. etc.

To prevent duplicates, please post what kind of cookie you will be making, and hopefully we'll have a nice variety. (In other words, we shouldn't end up with six different kinds of sugar cookies, but one would be fine!) We want EVERYONE to be able to bring cookies this time (one recipe per person, not per couple). Also, if one or two can volunteer to also bring drinks of some sort, that would be great.

  • Here's the recipe for the cookies I brought. It should be noted that I substituted tangerines for the oranges in the recipe.

    ORANGE DROP COOKIES
From "Desserts That Have Killed Better Men Than Me" by Jeremy Jackson

    COOKIE DOUGH
    3/4 cup sugar
    2/3 cup softened butter
    1 large egg
2 tbsp. finely grated orange zest
    1/2 cup fresh orange juice
    2 cups all-purpose flour
    1/2 tsp. baking powder
    1/2 tsp. baking soda
    1/2 teaspoon salt

    ICING
    2 1/4 cups confectioners' sugar
3 tbsp. + 2 tsp. salted butter, softened until nearly melted
1 tbsp. finely grated orange zest
2 tbsp. + 1 tsp. fresh orange juice
    Pinch of salt

Preheat oven to 400*. Lightly grease two or three cookie sheets with vegetable shortening or non-stick cooking spray, or line them with parchment paper.

Beat the sugar, butter and egg in a medium bowl until smooth. Beat in the orange zest and juice. At this point, the batter will look slightly curdled.

Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a small bowl, then add to the batter, stirring until everything is incorporated.

Drop the dough onto the cookie sheets, 2 teaspoons per cookie, placed two inches apart (they will spread a lot). Bake for 6 to 9 minutes, just until the cookies are set and lightly browned on the bottom. Let the cookies cool briefly on the cookie sheet before transferring to a wire rack.

When the cookies have cooled, prepare the icing by stirring all the ingredients together until smooth. Ice immediately.

    These cookies freeze very well.
